Ride along and experience the green and tree language of Nieuw-West.

The development of the Western Garden Cities, as part of Amsterdam's 1935 General Expansion Plan, was a milestone in the development of 'the green city'. The use of green and the role of the landscape architect was innovative within the AUP principle of light, air and space.

The ever-flowing green, with the green area and the park strip as characteristic elements of the garden city character, structures the spaces of Nieuw-West at all levels. A native tree language supports the readability of the lines, the (between) spaces and the transitions. The trees orchestrate the neighborhoods: from marching music to jazz!

The bike ride through Nieuw-West takes us from the front door of the Van Eesteren Museum to the landscape of the Osdorper Binnenpolder and back via the Sloterscheg.

Part of the Osdorper Binnenpolder still has the visible features of the old medieval peatland subdivision. Another part is now increasingly developing into the Gardens of West. Here we recognize Van Eesteren's test piece for the later Noordoostpolder and the consequences of the never-built Canal around the West.

Please note: You need your own bike for the bike ride.
